Ready to build habitat for our feathered friends?
Use our checklist as your guide - download it hereNorth America has lost 3 billion birds since the 1970s. Loss of habitat and pesticide use are the primary drivers of this staggering loss. You can help restore vital habitat right in your own yard. Birds are messengers for a much larger problem - be part of the solution - and start "Birdscaping" today!
Today the total number of birds in North America is estimated to be 29% less than in 1970. In other words, over the last half century the continent has lost more than one in four of its birds. Even abundant species not yet in danger of extinction have seen drastic reductions in numbers, mostly or entirely because of human activity. We are witnessing a mass bird die off in North America and time is running out. But the good news is that you can help, right in your own backyard. Do your part to help reverse this trend today! Before it’s too late.
Fundamental to habitat creation is shelter with hiding spots from predators, places build nests and find protection from the elements. Traditional suburban landscapes typically made up of large swaths of open mowed lawn with just a few trees and shrubs surrounded by mulch are the exact opposite of this.
The annual return of hummingbirds to Rhode Island is a favorite time for so many residents. With a little extra effort you can create a true summer habitat and haven for these jeweled wonders. Visit the Roadside Stand and you may even be entertained the antics of one of our many, many summer residents!
Over the past century, urbanization has taken, fragmented, and transformed ecologically productive land with sterile lawns and exotic ornamental plants. We’ve introduced walls of glass, toxic pesticides, and domestic predators. The human-dominated landscape no longer supports functioning ecosystems or provides healthy places for birds. By simply choosing native plants for our yards and public spaces, we can restore vital habitats for birds in our communities and help them adapt and survive in the face of climate change. Audubon’s Plants for Birds program is designed to enable anyone to have a positive impact by planting for birds, right where they live.
