Turn Your Landscape into a Birdscape 🐦

North America has lost 3 billion birds since the 1970s. Loss of habitat and pesticide use are the primary drivers of this staggering loss. You can help restore vital habitat right in your own yard. It’s For the Birds

Learn More

Today the total number of birds in North America is estimated to be 29% less than in 1970. In other words, over the last half century the continent has lost more than one in four of its birds. Even abundant species not yet in danger of extinction have seen drastic reductions in numbers, mostly or entirely because of human activity. We are witnessing a mass bird die off in North America and time is running out. But the good news is that you can help, right in your own backyard. Do your part to help reverse this trend today! Before it’s too late.

Could you be nature's best hope? Maybe so - learn more here.

Attract More Birds with Native Trees and Shrubs

Planting native trees and shrubs that produce berries is a great way to attract songbirds to your yard. Many of our songbirds rely on berries and other berry-like fruits for at least part of their diet. Some of our migratory songbirds, like gray catbirds, consume a significant amount of fruit, especially during their fall migration. In addition, many of our year-round residents such as cardinals and chickadees will eat berries especially in the late fall and winter when seeds and insects aren’t as abundant.

You can Create Bird Friendly Habitat Right at Home

Audubon Society Bird Friendly Communities

Help Create Bird Friendly Communities

Over the past century, urbanization has taken, fragmented, and transformed ecologically productive land with sterile lawns and exotic ornamental plants. We’ve introduced walls of glass, toxic pesticides, and domestic predators. The human-dominated landscape no longer supports functioning ecosystems or provides healthy places for birds.  By simply choosing native plants for our yards and public spaces, we can restore vital habitats for birds in our communities and help them adapt and survive in the face of climate change. Audubon’s Plants for Birds program is designed to enable anyone to have a positive impact by planting for birds, right where they live.
