The Native Plant Emporium is located in Swansea, MA. Look for the Big Red Barn on Barneyville Road (literally) on the Barrington, RI/Swansea, MA town/state border. Use 6 Barneyville Road, Barrington, RI 02806 for GPS (make sure GPS is taking you to Barrington not Swansea), but pull into the driveway at the red barn on the Swansea side of the state line, not the house on the Barrington side. It can be a little bit tricky if it is your first visit, so just message us if you need help finding us.
We accept cash, Venmo, credit and debit cards. Thanks in advance for your patronage and interest in adding beneficial plants to your yards and gardens.
Our focus and specialty is Native (indigenous) Plants including perennials, grasses, shrubs, trees and complimentary plants and products focused on restoring habitat right at home 🐝🦋🐦. Be sure to ask about our signature plant, Native Prickly Pear Cactus which happily grows outdoors in Southern New England sandy soils.
Our inventory is constantly changing, just like the New England weather. Visit often to score the very best finds! We are a small, hyper-local establishment with a huge variety of Northeast Native Plants. We often have more than 250 varieties on hand at any time including rare, endangered and hard to find in the nursery trade native plants. Nearly all of our plants are native East of the Rockies and many are New England specific natives, including Eco-Region 59 seed grown varieties. Ask about our Wicked Rugged Line!
Throughout the Spring we carry a wide selection of certified organic herb & veggie plants including heirloom and unusual varieties. We also offer a line of amazing designer jumbo flowering annuals selected for their uncanny ability to attract hummingbirds and butterflies from miles away. At all times of year we offer perennials, grasses, ferns, shrubs and small trees in robust sizes typically ranging from 1-5 gallons pots. We do not use any pesticides here at our nursery and we only source plants from growers who are deeply committed to environmental stewardship in their growing practices including integrated pest management techniques that minimize the use of any chemical inputs. The plants that we sell are not artificially forced into bloom in heated greenhouses. Most of the perennials and shrubs are grown outdoors and following natural growing rhythms and our annuals are grown by an experienced grower who utilizes a complex hardening off process that creates far more cold tolerance and resiliency in the plants.
We are very committed to meeting the rapidly growing demand for great native plants and so as we move into 2024 we will significantly scale back our own growing and focus our energies on working with very high quality specialty Northeast Growers who are able to supply us with a dazzling array of responsibly grown, extremely high quality, well rooted plants in the quantities we need to respond to your planting goals. These wholesale growers have decades of experience offering some of the very best products in the industry. Many of these plants are grown from eco-type seed from New England and nearby Long Island. We believe that making this switch is important not only to get more beneficial plant roots into the ground in our area but also to help to demonstrate to growers that there is in fact a strong market for native plants, thus seeding broader and longer-lasting change.
We are definitely not a traditional nursery. We are here on a mission to change gardening practices for the greater good and to offer support and community for others on a similar quest. We encourage you to use the educational resources we produce in the form of newsletters, newspaper articles, blog posts and more. We also hope you will attend one of the educational programs we offer in the community or here at the Emporium.
STOP! And read here before exploring the lists below! These lists represent plants that our fabulous northeast wholesale growers have currently guaranteed to deliver to us during the spring sales season (April - June). Not all of the plants on the lists are on the shelves at all times, and this is a not a live, frequently updated inventory. The intent of the lists is merely to give you a flavor of offerings and to allow you to do a bit of plant research before visiting. All of the plants are linked to descriptions so you can have some fun investigating varieties you might not have heard of previously.
In addition, please note that many more plants than what is listed here are available by special order and can often be in stock for you within as little as just a week or two. We have very limited space at the Emporium so do not keep all available plants on hand at all times! We receive multiple deliveries of new plants each and every single week so if you live nearby we highly recommend stopping by often to see what's new! If you are traveling from a distance and are looking for something specific please just send us a message and we are happy to check on availability before you make the trip! If you have questions or need additional information on any of the plants, again, please just reach out and we are happy to help.
